Meeting Minutes August 17, 2004

"As long as the freezer is working we will have hotdogs for the barbeque"
The meeting got started with a small barbeque with Sal, N4YQU behind the controls.

BRARA dinner meeting:
Some of our members attended the very successful BRARA dinner meeting on August the 3rd. At the meeting some equipment was offered for sale and the club bought 2 power supplies. BRARA has scheduled a free flea for November 6th at Plum Park. Talk-in will be on the WB4QNX repeater (145.290MHz)

Who will run the net?:
The ever so popular "who will run the net?" question was initially answered with a lot of silence. Luckily some volunteers came forward so everybody can check into the FAU/CERT net every Wednesday at 7:00 pm on the KC4GH repeater (147.225 MHz).
Hank will try to contact CERT to have a small announcement placed in the next CERT newsletter to promote the net.

Hurricane Charley:
We were lucky here in Boca Raton. None of our members reported any damage. We almost forgot to lower our antenna tower at T6, but luckily Sjaak, W4RIS remembered and he lowered the tower and unplugged all equipment.
This hurricane once again proofs that we need to be prepared and that we as Amateur Radio operators can play an important role.
The ARRL has a good article up on their site:
Hurricane Charley Response Reaffirms Amateur Radio's Value

FAU closed their doors early Friday before Charley made landfall and there are some that think that was unnecessary. Everybody at the meeting agreed that it is better to be safe and closing FAU early was the right decision.

Our role at FAU:
The main role of our club is for the students as described in our mission statement.
With the events of the past days it is clear that we can be of more value to FAU.
EHS / EOC on the Boca campus has recently acquired some Amateur Radio equipment. Via Hank, N3HV the request has come in to help them setup this equipment including the antennas and towers. It was brought up in the meeting that it might be better if a professional company does the installation and support of the equipment.
We can provide volunteer radio operator when needed.
Hank, N3HV will contact Bruce, KC4GH to find out who services the equipment of the Boca Raton Fire Rescue Services and he will pass that information on to EHS.

Election of new officers in September:
During our next meeting we will need to elect new club officers.
Many of the officers will leave FAU at the end of this semester.
If you like to be a club officer or you want to nominate somebody please let Hank, N3HV know before the beginning of the next meeting.

New antenna:
It is still unclear what the status is of our new antenna. Hank, N3HV will try to get a hold of John, WD4V to check what is going on.

Our next meeting will be: Tuesday September 21.

Unofficial report by Sjaak W4RIS.
